@UFUKLIVE: Hi, and welcome. We don't delete historical logos like File:Inönü üniversitesi logo.gif, we keep them for use in historical logo sections of Wikipedia articles. Please use internal links and upload a replacement or replacements for use in such sections and current infoboxes in such articles, and link them together via "other_versions". @Jeff G. Hi Jeff, Thank you for your detailed information. The reason for our request to remove this old unofficial logo is to prevent people from making the mistake of still using this unofficial and outdated logo from Google searches. The deletion of this unofficial logo, which is not included in İnönü University's Corporate Identity Guide, is a very sensitive issue for the İnönü University. Please respond positively to this humble request and remove this old logo from your systems.

@UFUKLIVE: I'm sorry, but this absolutely will not happen. This is like if someone asked a newspaper to remove a news story from its archives because it no longer reflected the current situations. Commons is a media repository associated with encyclopedias. For the correct use of the Corporate Logo of İnönü University, you can see this page with edu.tr extension (https://www.inonu.edu.tr/kurumsal/menu/24803/ana-logolar). Removing the current outdated logo, which is old and now incorrect to use nowadays, will promote the use of the current and correct logo of İnönü University. If you continue not to remove this old logo from the system, people will continue to use this outdated and unofficial logo as a result of their google searches. @Jeff G.: I don’t think that’s fair; I’d chalk it up to a language issue. @UFUKLIVE: would renaming the file to “Inönü üniversitesi logo 1975-2010” satisfy your concerns? That would make its obsolescence more obvious to people who may not read the description. @Odysseus1479 Thank you Odysseus, the renaming of the logo as 1975-2010 does not help to solve our current problem, because our case is that the google search for "inönü üniversitesi logo" directly shows this image as a priority, and our demand is to prevent people from using the wrong logo and to strengthen the image of the institution by restricting the access of this image at least. We respect the past, but unfortunately, people are still accessing and using this unofficial and outdated logo that has lost its official characteristic as a result of google searches. Help wanted with two crops of a "Doors" band pic yielding two single pics of Jim Morrison[edit]

About an hour ago I realized that I did not like the image of Jim Morrison in the en-article. Looking in the Commons cat, I found that there is no better pic, but a quite decent one of the whole group named File:The Doors 1968.JPG. After happily doing two crops File:Jim Morrison 1968, from a promotion picture with The Doors.jpg and File:Jim Morrison 1968, from a promotion picture with The Doors, V2.jpg, I got an equally decent fit of rage when adapting the image descriptions of the produced files - reason: I realized that while the source file image has "1968" in the title, and the categories are like that as well, the image description of the source file speaks of "taken in 1966" and then something like "earliest day stamp 1968". Now this is what I call a bloody mess. I do not want to make things worse by any quick "solutions", as I honestly do not understand these contradictions named above. Any advice? Please feel free to do whatever seems fit to remedy this, I personally first need to get my heart rate down for the next two hours ;-) Pittigrilli (talk) 20:50, 29 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Pittigrilli: I think what's happened here is that the original uploader only knew what was actually on the print, which was a series of date stamps of which the earliest said "JUN 2 1968". You can see these in the oldest revision of the file. In November last year, Carlinal added the mentions of 1966 in a minor edit, but didn't change anything else.
My guess is that whatever the date stamps indicate, it's not when the picture was taken, so until November last year all we knew was that the photo was taken in 1968 or earlier. So that's not inconsistent with Carlinal's claim that it was actually taken in 1966. Getty claim "circa 1970"[1], which is no help.
Personally, I think I'd leave things as they are (now that I've repaired the {{Information}} template). As a filemover (albeit a mostly inactive one), I don't think there's strong enough evidence to justify renaming the original under criterion 3 (obvious error), and if the original continues to have "1968" in the name then the derivatives may as well say that too. I suppose there's something to be said for renaming the crops to not mention the year at all so that they definitely won't need renaming later, but I don't think that's necessary. --bjh21 (talk) 23:02, 29 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ok, thank you very much for the clarification effort. I am moderately satisfied ;-) Now my approach is this: If we leave the three files as is, for the next 10 to 200 years (who knows?), every single day somebody will recognize this and think "WTF?". Positively. Why not write a short comment summarizing the problem into the file description? Maybe "The different values for the production date of the image (from 1966 to 1968) result from the fact that the original date the picture was taken is not precisely known. Most likely seems 1967 (see homepage of photographer Joel Brodsky [3])", or the like. What do you think? Pittigrilli (talk) 10:16, 30 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Credit Joel Brodsky as the author and date the creation from 1967. There is no apparent reason to doubt the 1967 date, which seems the consensus on the websites that speak of it (e.g. context, uncropped version). Joel Brodsky opened his studio in 1967 and the photo was published in 1967. However, the APA cropped version might have been published later, if that's worth mentioning. The 1966 date was inserted by one user on Commons and Wikipedia. Either that user knows something that most people don't, which is always possible, or, more likely, the user confused the 1967 Joel Brodsky photos with the 1966 Guy Webster photos. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:33, 30 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Jmabel: Underground newspaper? Hippie movement? I begin to even more like this pic ;-) So these US copyright complications always gave me headaches. I already saw that User:Asclepias dug out that this picture was the sleeve cover of the single "Light my Fire", but does that somehow change the copyright status for us? (10 minutes later: I think I found it myself. As the paper ad does not have a copyright notice either, this makes the image even more (just kidding) in PD, right? Could you elaborate on what you mean by "resolve"? Based on past experience, i usually make things worse when i explain what is wrong with their edits. Also, if i reverted an edit, the result will be an edit war. Deletion of file in Wikimaps Warper[edit]

I uploaded a version of this map file yesterday: File:Admiralty Chart No 3992 Hai-nan Tao to Hong Kong, Published 1961.jpg. I started to georeference it iin the warper, but discovered the file had been garbled by the stitcher. I requested speedy deletion so I could astart again. I've uploaded a good version of the file, but when I try to georeference, the warper still has the old, corrupt file. How do I delete the old file from Wikimaps Warper? Thanks. Yes. The old corrupt file is still there in the warper. I have uploaded a good version to Commons, but when I try to georeference it I get the old corrupt file, not the new one. So I need to delete the old file from the warper. Thanks Kognos (talk) 11:43, 6 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Audio file from OUDB Northern Mansi Corpus[edit]

This audio file that I wish to upload to commons, is in mp3 format. Sadly the file does not contain any information from the person being recorded only the recorder.[4] And there is no clear statement of the usage of this file, regarding copyright. What should I do? Images reversed, switch them or reupload?[edit]

Hi all,

Through a mislabel I swapped the uploads File:Meibergdreefmetrobrug.jpg and File:Pietersbergweg.jpg. They're exactly swapped around, the first should be the latter and the latter the first. Can a user help in explaining SVG/raster formatting in another language (Russian)?[edit]

Greetings. I'm not really sure where else to ask for this situation. I require the assistance of a user fluent in the Russian language to help explain to Alterbulat the issues with uploading a raster image over a vector file; in this case File:Standard of the President of the Chechen Republic.svg. As you can see in the file history, the raster version is distorted and non-scaleable. They have expressed a desire for this to be explained in another language on my talk page, and based on their previous edit summaries I believe Russian is the best option. Thanks. Changing License on many files[edit]

  • @Bigguy637: You can add an alternate license, but generally you can't revoke a license you've already granted.
  • Assuming you used reasonably normal ways to place the license on the files in the first place (direct use of a license template in the wikitext, as against (for example) SDC + tricky templating) you should be able to do this with VFC. There's a bit of a learning curve on the tool, but it's powerful. For example, you could use it to replace {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}} with {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0|cc-by-sa-4.0}} on a selected set of files. - Jmabel ! talk 00:52, 1 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Blaisantkerk - new page[edit]

I tried for the first time to create a new page 'Blaisantkerk'. I am the president of the non profit organisation DOIC vzw, who is the owner of the multifunctional building 'Blaisantkerk'. I prepared a text in word that i copied. The text was posted yesterday - but now removed. The explanation that i got from Wikipedia:

Wikipedia is bedoeld als een vrij beschikbare, vrij bewerkbare en neutrale encyclopedie voor iedereen. Hoewel iedereen van harte is uitgenodigd om Wikipedia te bewerken, vond een medewerker aan de encyclopedie een of meer van uw bewerkingen niet constructief. Deze bewerking(en) is/zijn daarom teruggedraaid of verwijderd.

In short: my input was not 'constructive'. What does that mean? The text was just the history of the building and the new facility. Who could help me? What do I need to change?

So this is Wikimedia Commons: it is a sister project to Wikipedia that is about storing media (audio, images, video, etc.). If you have an issue on Wikipedia, you'll have to discuss it with editors there. Alboort michel: If you were writing in Dutch, then perhaps start by looking at this Dutch webpage. Most wikipedia language sites have their own requirements but for instance the English wikipedia has a Draft section where people can write articles which will then be reviewed for notablity and complying with the standards for an acceptable article. Wikipedia is not a promotional site and it is highly discouraged to write about subjects you have any type involvement with due to a conflict of interest. @Alboort michel: Clarifying where Jeff wrote "please post permission there," he means that http://blaisantkerk.be/ could indicate a CC-BY-SA 4.0 (or more generous) license for all or part of its content; then there would be no copyright problem using that content on Wikipedia. Du darfst Bilder von allen Ländern einreichen/uploaden solange sie entweder gemeinfrei sind, du ihr Autor bist oder du die Erlaubnis des Autors erhalten hast (so einer Erlaubnis musst du dann dem VRT team zukommen lassen). Was alles Gemeinfrei ist, und was es das wird, da sind die Gesetze aber von Land zu Land verschieden. Hier die Verschiedenen Länderspezifischen Gesetze. Ich glaube es geht hier um Wiki loves Folklore? Bilder gehören in die jeweilige Landeskategorie des Wettbewerbs und natürlich ist es notwendig zum Fotografieren in dem Land gewesen zu sein, aber mehr auch nicht. If you are just talking about citing them in a Wikipedia article, there is no need that they be online, just correctly cited. And, actually unlike what Paradise Chronicle said, you should not forward VRT a permission someone sent to you (if you are going that route at all). The copyright-holder needs to be in direct contact with VRT, though its fine if you are cc'd; you can even start the correspondence, cc'ing both, but the copyright-holder would need to respond on that thread and explicitly agree to grant the relevant permission. - Jmabel ! talk 20:26, 1 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Stephen Vest, are you attempting to create an article about a person on the English Wikipedia? Do you wish to submit certificates as "proof" of information in that biography? At Wikimedia Commons, we are not concerned about what facts may be supported by the content of those certificates. @Brunogp89: assuming you mean a page on the English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki), please don't do that. Writing about yourself for professional purposes on en-wiki is one of the quickest ways to have your account blocked there. See their guidance on conflicts of interest.
Similarly, normally there are only two reasons why a picture of yourself would belong on Commons. (1) If you are participating in a significant way in one or more WMF projects, you are welcome to upload a small number of personal photos to use on your user pages on the projects (e.g. at User:Brunogp89 and its equivalent on other projects). (2) If you are notable for some reason such that a photo of you would be in scope, then it is OK that you are the uploader. E.g. if there is a Wikipedia article about you, or you are a major league athlete, or an elected official, or an author of books published by a reasonably established press, or are a professor at a university, etc., then your photo would be welcome. Unlike en-wiki, we don't have a rule against adding it yourself.
However, even in that last case, to be hosted on Commons, the photo needs either to be in the public domain or to have a free license issued by the holder of the copyright. There are very few ways that a photo of a living person ends up in the public domain, especially anything taken after the late 1980s, so it is nearly always a matter of a license. Only the copyright-holder can grant a license and that usually means the photographer, not the subject of the photo (selfies are OK in this respect, since you are your own photographer). Nein, das kannst Du hier nicht. Dein Artikel befindet sich nämlich nicht hier auf commons.wikimedia.org sondern auf de.wikipedia.org - also auf der deutschsprachigen Wikipedia. Der Artikel wurde dort auch garnicht gelöscht, sondern zuerst auf den korrekten Namen verschoben und dann in Deinen Benutzernamensraum, damit er nicht gelöscht wird, solange er unfertig ist. Im Artikelnamensraum würde er nämlich gelöscht werden. Und falls das geschieht kannst Du Hilfe auch nur auf der deutschssprachigen Wikipedia bekommen. Aber zunächst wird das nicht geschehen, du kannst den Artikel vervollständigen.

Privately commissioned drawing[edit]

Hi. Prior to the Cuban Communist revolution, a neighborhood association in Cuba commissioned a drawing from a well known Cuban Cartoonist to commemorate a resident's contributions to the Boy Scouts of Cuba. This "cartoon" is on the cover of the Association's monthly bulletin. I have checked to U.S. Copyright office for the artist's works, and the above privately commissioned work does not appear. When the Communist government assumed power in Cuba, it eliminated individual property rights, so everything would be public domain in that country. The cartoonist passed away in 1965. Can I assume that this work is in the public domain and upload it to the Wikipedia page of the person in whose honor it was created? The individual is no longer alive. Cuba does have copyright and is a part of the Berne Convention; see {{PD-Cuba}}. It's free in Cuba, as life+50 means it left copyright in 2016. @GFC Otter: It wouldn't exactly be "because it was a copyrighted image" but it would likely be because you tried a cross-wiki upload of a small file, and when relatively new users try to do that it is usually a copyright violation, so we set up a filter so they will come ask, like you just did. You don't say what college and you don't link to the new logo, but unless it is so simple as not to be eligible for copyright, anything "new" is almost certainly copyrighted and should not be on Commons unless the copyright-holder (which could be the designer or the college, depending on the agreement between the two) provides a free license, which typically won't happen in cases like this.
Instead, and assuming we are talking about the English-language Wikipedia (you didn't say, but I'm guessing) you should use their approach for handling non-free content, which is entirely internal to the English-language Wikipedia and does not involve Commons. @BinaryBrainBug: more-or-less contemporary photos are almost never free enough for Commons, unless someone has specifically issued a free license, which does not appear to be the case here. But other than that: since the U.S. dropped its requirement for a copyright notice in 1989, there is no significant country in the world where photographs aren't generally copyrighted at creation. There are a handful of exceptions. Some governments, notably the U.S. federal government and a few U.S. states, place work by their employees (but usually not their contractors) immediately immediately in the public domain. Some other governments waive copyright for national symbols, protecting them by non-copyright means. Why am I not able to upload an historic portrait (photo from 1926) of my great grandfather?[edit]

@Böhmler Nachlass: Quite likely you are able to upload it. You don't say who or what prevented you, which makes this a bit difficult to address. If it was an attempt at a cross-wiki upload there are a lot of filters on that; please use Special:UploadWizard here on Commons.

However, Commons needs the picture to be also valid under U.S. copyright, and if you don't know the author and it was never published, it has 120 years of U.S. protection, so it can't be published in Commons until 2047. If you could establish who took the photo, then Commons could accept it 70 years after their death. On the page you link to is a copyright notice. So this font is not free and cannot be used in a svg on commons. Also: only webfonts can be used that are available on WMF sites. Even if this font was free, it is unlikely to be included. You can however use one of the webfonts from commons, or you can use a svg editor to transform the text into vector graphics - provided that is not in conflict with the copyright of the font desginer. You can always contact the photographer with the form on his website and check with him if the photo is really offered under the CC license as indicated by the Huntington Theatre. @Kmnahidulislambd: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png image as a new user. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to license it on your official website or social media or send permission via VRT. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able filter 153. Also, Special:AbuseFilter/186 and ​ another filter worked as intended. Two questions[edit]

1. I made a straightened version of the poorly-named File:Museums Victoria Collections.jpg (an Australian broadcast radio listener's licence from 1952) but received the (automated) refusal on the grounds I did not have permission to overwrite the file. I was under the impression that the modified file became the new "go to" version but that the previous version/s remained available if the need for reversion arose.

2. I am going through a box of photographs I inherited from my father-in-law. Some may be useful to illustrate a Wikipedia article, such as File:Hansen residence.jpg I recently uploaded. That one was easy as it was taken before 1955, so copyright-free under Australian law, but others may be younger. How do I release such images? None would have been published elsewhere. The proposal to "Limit file overwriting to users with autopatrol rights" was accepted with many supports and one weak oppose 15:19, 23 September 2023 (UTC). After an implementation problem in phab:T345896 and testing, Special:AbuseFilter/290 went live with the Disallow action 09:35, 28 October 2023 (UTC). Please read MediaWiki:abusefilter-warning-file-overwriting. You may request COM:AP at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to overwrite. On your second question: was your father-in-law the photographer for all of these? Are either you or your wife the heirs to his intellectual property? If so, this will be pretty simple.

As for my father-in-law's photos, I have uploaded only one. He was not a professional artist or photographer, just an enthusiastic amateur, so intellectual property was the least of his concerns. I just ended up with a box of negatives when his wife was clearing the house.

As for the stash of photos, when Max (my F.I.L.) died, Joan (my M.I.L) cleared the house and moved to a more convenient place, and their four daughters took whatever mementoes they fancied, and much went to the garbage tip, from which I "inherited" the box of negatives by default. I can't say I was his favorite S.I.L. (I wasn't), but clearly the only one with a sense of history. So, in short, his wife inherited his property rights and she passed them to me. @Doug butler: On the image: I don't think that is necessarily an improvement. It is less sharp. I'm going to revert that and see if I can do that better myself.
No, the image is just too low-res to rotate without a significant loss of sharpness. Maybe there's some AI-based way to do it, but not anything I use. On the photos: In the absence of a will, this is a little messy. I honestly don't know whether this would be considered a solid basis for her to claim to be heir to the relevant copyrights or not. I presume this is Australia we are talking about. Sadly, that 50-year thing is not so simple for Commons, because anything that was still copyrighted in 1996 had its U.S. copyright extended at that time to 95 years from creation, and Commons follows U.S. copyright because that is legally where we publish, plus we voluntarily follow the laws of the country of origin. So we really need a free license for these.
With the proviso that they may say that they actually need to hear from all the heirs, not just one: the most straightforward thing to do would be for your wife to send an email to the address given at COM:VRT, agreeing to license her father's photos under a specific free license (I suggest {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}} or {{CC-BY-4.0}}) and authorizing you to upload on her behalf, specifying this account name as who will be uploading. Then, when you upload, you would attribute her father as author, and indicate the license as {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} or {{Cc-by-4.0-heirs}}. - Jmabel ! talk 03:01, 8 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Another possibility might be to obtain from Joan a writing confirming that she inherited from Max and that she transferred to you the negatives and their copyrights. Then you send a copy of that writing to VRT. Of course, that works if Joan is living and has not changed her mind about it. If Joan is not living, the fact that her gift to you was not confirmed in writing might be a problem about the copyrights. Document with multiple pages[edit]

I want to upload a three-page document (or part of document collection). The source is JPEG images.

What should I do?

  1. upload 3 different images (how to link them together?)
  2. compile them in one PDF (it will have nice paging on Commons page)
  3. use some template (that I couldn't find) for multiple files paging
  4. create a gallery or category

Sadly, I have yet to find a fully-functional dark mode solution for editing here. What mobile browser and OS do you use for editing in light mode? I usually use Chrome on Windows, and I found this extension lacking (it changed every tab in every window at once, negatively impacting performance). I may go back to it if I have another computer death, new computer, or "browser forgot everything" incident. For just browsing in Chrome on Android, I have gone into Settings / Theme and selected the "Dark" radio button, but that doesn't do anything for me. Samsung Internet Browser actually respects my Android's Settings / Display / "Dark" radio button.
