Hi. To delete pages, you can either add it as a Commons:Deletion requests if this needs discussion, or list is as speedy delete for simple cases. In any case, I made New orleans into an redirect to New Orleans, since i assume more people (i.e. me) will make the same mistake. thanks -- Chris 73 04:24, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Ernest Hemingway[edit]
Hi, what is your source for the photo of Hemingway, Image:Hemingway 1957.jpg? According to Library and Archives Canada this photo is protected by copyright: "No reproduction of items in copyright for publication or exhibition purposes." [1]. I noticed that you added this photo to en, de, fr, pt and pl which might have been to early. Thuresson 04:23, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- You are of course right, it's still under copyright. Please delete. Balcer 16:56, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and or licensing of this particular file. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? Thank you. --- Ooops, forgot to add the license tag. Fixed now. Thanks for letting me know about this. Background in coins scans[edit]
May I ask you a favor? Sorry, I don't know how easy to do this job, but if you have some time, could you please remove background in my coins scans: Image:Poland-1923-Coin-0.20.jpg, Image:Poland-1923-Coin-0.50.jpg, Image:Poland-1929-Coin-1.jpg, Image:USA-1904-Coin-20.jpg (and some other - see my gallery)? Thank you. --EugeneZelenko 17:13, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
- Never mind, forget it :-)
- I'll try to experiment with colors adjustments of images in future. Thank you for pointing me to good software!

Stravinsky[edit]
I noticed you uploaded a Library of Congress photograph of Igor Stravinsky. If possible, please upload it at the highest possible resolution available, which, in this case, is quite large. Thanks. --tomf688 (talk - email) 03:13, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
- Just wondering, is uploading at the highest possible resolution always the best way to go? Some of the files in the Library of Congress archives are truly huge (over 50 MB tiff), but due to the limitations of photographic techniques of the time this does not reflect their high resolution but only the "choppiness" of the photo itself. I think it makes great sense to shrink them to reasonable size, as the highest resolution simply captures the graininess of the film and little more.Balcer 03:32, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Vickers 8 inch Howitzer in the Hämeenlinna Artillery Museum[edit]
Hello Balcer, it's great that you've added more photographs - the rest of us who can't travel to Europe really appreciate this. I have a question - can you tell us where the "Mk 7" information comes from ? Does the museum description state this ? My information is that Finland bought 8 inch Howitzer Mk 6 from the US, which has a short barrel. The barrels of the guns in the Finland museum photographs appear much shorter than WWII photographs of British 8 inch Howitzers with the long Mk 7 and Mk 8 barrels. Or is this a problem with my eyeballs ?! You can see the pictures of the Brit Mk 8 in the same category. regards Rcbutcher 11:56, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
- The museum label states (verbatim):
- 8 in Howitzer Mk 7
- (Wickers Mark 6)
- A British 8-inch heavy howitzer model 6 manufactured in the USA in 1917.
- And here is another source [4].
- I have no idea why there is this discrepancy in model numbers, as I am no expert on this. Maybe it is the difference between US and British designations? For the photo name I just used the first line of the museum description. If you want, please add this additional information to photo captions as needed. I added some information about what is stamped on the gun. Balcer 14:04, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
- That's great, thanks for supplying this additional info. I'm not certain, but I suspect there is an error on the Finnish documentation which seems to be repeated by others. US sources used the same naming as the British i.e. Mk 6 and Mk 8. The differentiation between Mk 6 and Mk 7/8 is important because Mk 7 and 8 had far greater range than the Mk 6. I believe all available surviving Mk 7/8 were supplied to Britain, and Mk 6 was considered obsolete and hence was available to others. I'll correct the image descriptions. But Mk 7 may refer to the Finnish naming, about which I know nothing other than that they referred to this as 203 H/17. I suspect that what has happened is that the museum name plate is meant to read "BL 8 inch Howitzer Model 1917, Vickers Mark 6". regards,Rod Rcbutcher 04:24, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
Hello Balcer~commonswiki!
Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.
To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.
You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.
The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!
Thank you. 85.179.172.200 07:48, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
What kind of digital camera do I need to take good photos of artillery ?[edit]
Hi there, I see you take a lot of digital photos of guns. I'd like to get a camera for similar puposes here in Australia. What sort of camera to I need to take mostly closeups of large objects like guns, indoors and outdoors ? Do I need to spend a lot ? Special lense ? If you can recommend models I can check prices here. regards, RodRcbutcher 08:33, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi. I am nowhere near being a professional or even good amateur photographer, so I don't have much good advice to give here. Until recently the camera I used for my photos was a Sony DSC-W50, which has the main advantage that it is tiny and fits easily in my pockets, so I can take it everywhere. In this way, when there is an unexpected opportunity to take a good photo, there is a better chance that I have something to take it with. In other words, if your camera is too bulky and carrying it is a chore, then you might decide to leave it in your hotel room, car or house, missing out on good photos.
- The main drawback of that camera and others like it is that it does pretty badly in dimly lighted interiors (like museums), or places with any lighting that differs significantly from that of a family birthday party. So, for example, taking photos of museum exhibits displayed inside can often be problematic, and the pictures end up plagued by noise. The only sure cure for this is to buy a more expensive camera with a good light sensor (which means you pretty much have to buy a DSLR, which are expensive and rather heavy). One possible cheaper cure is to buy a camera with full manual settings control and use a tripod to get longer exposures so that noise is eliminated.
- Overall then, if you plan to take photos mostly outdoors or in well lit interiors, pretty much any digital camera sold these days will give you reasonable results most of the time (with some trial and error). If you want acceptable indoor photos in more challenging locations, the way to go is to buy a DSLR. Balcer 14:13, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for that, sounds like I may have to spend some money to get good indoor shots. Oh well...Rcbutcher 21:42, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

File:15 cm L40 Feldkanone iR monument.jpg from Flickr =[edit]
Hi, can you give information on how you identified this gun as 15 cm L40 Feldkanone iR ? The EN Wiki description en:15 cm L/40 Feldkanone i.R. seems to imply it was deployed on a fixed platform rather than on a typical field gun carriage, which is what it appears to be in the photo. regards, Rod Rcbutcher (talk) 04:14, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
- Hi. My rather uncertain identification is based on photos shown on landships. Obviously from one poor quality photo one cannot be 100% sure. Photo was not taken by me, and I don't even have any idea where this gun is located. If you can identify it better, please do so. balcer (talk) 16:10, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
- As usualy you appear to be correct ! The info and photos on Landships explain how it was fixed in position for field use. Your photo from Flickr appears to show the same gun as the photos on Landships apparently in Naval Museum in Varna in Bulgaria... so the photo from Flickr appears to be from Bulgaria... ?? Most such guns as displayed in the Flickr photo were war trophies handed out to local municipalities who had sent men to the Allied war effort. and are usually seen in Canada, Britain, Australia etc... I think the location given on the Landships page is wrong. The Flickr photos appear to be from a war memorial park at Woodbridge, Ontario. See http://www.cdli.ca/monuments/on/woodbrdg.htm . Tip: Categorizing images[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 07:57, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Your account will be renamed[edit]
Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Balcer. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Balcer~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell

GO Transit MP54AC No. 647[edit]
I'm not sure if you still live in Canada or not, or if you lived in Canada at all. However, since you took pictures of GO Transit trains before, I have a request for you.
I would like you look for locomotive #647. The main reason why is because that locomotive is extremely unique: it is currently an MPI MP54AC, and the only MP54AC in service. It is also the first MP54AC ever built. One thing for sure, Commons does not have any pictures of the locomotive at the moment. If you would like to know, the locomotive looks like this: https://www.wabtec.com/products/5103/mp54-ac-commuter-locomotive
Let me know if you are able to do that. If you can do that. If not, I will search for someone else. Thank you.
