Image deletion warning | Image:Pietro Mascagni - Cavalleria Rusticana - Intermezzo Sinfonico.ogg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file. |

Sisterprojects[edit]
Hello, could you just explain to me why you´ve removed the link to Wikispecies in the template the [1]? Thanx and greetings from :Bdk: 12:50, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- I removed Wikispecies from Sister Projects as it is not a sister project - it is a sub-project of Wikipedia. --Oldak Quill 20:00, 6 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- Hm, that´s new to me. That page does not provide the required information for me. Could you please give me a link to the information about the mentioned status? Thanx a lot :-) --:Bdk: 03:02, 7 Dez 2004 (UTC)
- Wikispecies is a inter-language listing of taxonomy, it has no content apart from taxonomy - and never will. It serves Wikipedia and makes browsing between languages easier. --Oldak Quill 18:32, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- Hello again. This was not the question, i knew that before. And i want to point out that i´m not active in content on wikispecies. So where can i find information about the different status you see between sister an sub projects? Commons also just serve other projects ... --:Bdk: 05:29, 8 Dez 2004 (UTC)

about Coffee_bean.png[edit]
Hi. I'm author of the current version of ja:画像:Coffee_bean.png, you have requested for translation. I received your irc message, and now notice you that I uploaded English version image:Coffee_Bean_Structure.png. I thank ja:user:Miya and user:Tomos for the information and the useful advice, respectively. Thank you for request.--Y tambe 03:14, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Why PNG?[edit]
Hi Oldak. Did you convert Image:Drinking coffee with beans.png from JPG to PNG? Why? The PNG version is ten times bigger. I was considering replacing uses of en:Image:Coffee cup.JPG with this Commons version when I noticed that. Dbenbenn 00:57, 23 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- PNG is patent free, JPG has the potential for legal issues. I want Commons to be absolutely free where possible. --Oldak Quill 20:41, 23 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Pronunciation of Old English words[edit]
I replied to your post on ang:Talk:Héafodsíde, but to save you going over there, here's what I said:
- A great idea. I've created a page on the Old English Wictionary at Ábiddan rihtstefne. I'm not sure how much we'll be able to keep up with demand, but it's worth a try. My spoken OE is not great, but I can probably get a pronunciation of a short phrase right with enough tries. :) --Saforrest 04:21, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Commons-l subscription[edit]
Hello OldakQuill,
as per Commons talk:Administrators, I am asking all admins to subscribe to commons-l, a mailing list for Wikimedia Commons policy and project discussion. Since many admins are only on Commons infrequently, this is a good way to alert people about important happenings. The mailing list is nominally multilingual, but predominantly English.
If you are already subscribed to commons-l, I apologize for bothering you, and you are free to ignore this message. If you don't want to use your regular e-mail account, feel free to leave me a message, and I can send you a GMail invite. Traffic on the mailing list is relatively low, and we do not expect admins to read all messages to the list, but it would be nice if you could check on it at least every few weeks. Thanks for your time,--Eloquence 23:13, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks. By coincidence, I signed up today independently. --Oldak Quill 18:03, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Hello,
If you consent for statistics to be published about your actions as an administrator, please sign here: Commons:Administrator permission for statistics. (I expect that most people will not have a problem with it unless you are especially concerned with privacy.)
Also, please be aware that we now have a Commons:Administrators' noticeboard. Please put it on your watchlist, if you haven't already!

Thanks for uploading Image:XIV fresco in the Chiesa di San Agostino, Fermo, Italy.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. San Sebastiano[edit]
In a picture there are two things to be considered: whether the work of art is in the PD, and whether the picture in itself is in the PD. I asked you about the second point, you answer me referring to the second one. Yes I know the paintings are in the PD, the point is whether the pictures are. If you took the pictures yourself, and you donated the images to Commons, then there would be no problems. Otherwise, we need to know who and when took the picture.
It is simply false that "two dimensional images..." and so on, are on the PD in itself. This is a court ruling that is valid in the Usa, but the Usa are not the world. In Italy, if a pcture has some "artistic merit", it is copyrightable. And since Commons is not a Usa-only thing, we must comply with the international legislation, not with the Usa one.
If you prefere, you can uplod those pictures on en.Wiki instead. Wo do so in Italy with pictures that are in the PD for the Italian law, but not for the international law.
Just to give an idea, look at how many pix were deleted in this gallery: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Transwiki:Gallery_of_illuminated_manuscript_images ; they were all 2D reproductions and so on, but... But whose source was unknown...
I suggest that you discuss the matter further in the Village pump page. I am not an adm. I am just a contributor who is checking the images related to Italy and their copyright situation. Best wishes. --G.dallorto 16:48, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
- G.dallorto is correct here. For an image to be acceptable on Commons it must infringe no copyright. For this type of image there may in principle be two copyrights: the first being that of the artist (which has obviously expired long ago), and the second being that of the photographer. Now, it's true that in the USA, a mere record-photograph of a 2D work of art can't in itself attract photographic copyright. But that's not the case elsewhere, and it particular I believe it is not the case in Italy (it's certainly not the case in the UK). Even though the servers are indeed in the US, the rule here is that an image must be copyright free both in the US and in the country where the photograph was taken. So unless you are able to get an appropriate licence from the photographer, these images will I fear need to be deleted. --MichaelMaggs 21:00, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
Administrative notice[edit]
Hi. This message is sent out to you because you are an administrator on Commons, and you made little use (or no use) of the admin tools lately: less than 5 times in the last five months.
Commons has a new policy on admin activity, Commons:Administrators/De-adminship, taken into use on June 13, 2007 (after a poll among users). According to that policy, admins who use their tools infrequently will be asked whether they still need their adminship, and if they do not respond or require them the removal of the tools will be requested.
If you feel you still need your admin tools, please sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days from the date this message was sent out. However, if you then don't make 5 admin actions in the following 5 months, you will lose the adminship without any notice.
This is not a comment on the considerable help you have given to the project in the past but reflects the wish of the community to see active administrators and to ensure that possible security breaches are minimized.
double categories[edit]
Hi OldakQuill, thanks for adding Category:Ship components. It seems that this category is synonymous to Category:Ship parts, so I've proposed to delete it. If you wish to comment, please contact me or write a comment in the discussion. Thanks, Ibn Battuta 18:06, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

Administrative notice[edit]
Dear OldakQuill. I am writing to you to inform you that because of inactivity, you may lose your adminship on Commons.
Commons has a new policy on admin activity, Commons:Administrators/De-adminship, taken into use on June 13, 2007 (after a two-week poll on the proposed policy's talk page).
If you want to keep your adminship, you have to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days. Note that if you don't make 5 admin actions in the following 5 months, you will then lose the adminship anyways.
Thank you,
abf /talk to me/ 11:18, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

The CSS definitions are not much easier to maintain, this is only your point of view. The image editor is better to provide a visual standardization to the maps. The image can be changed easily by everyone. The image editors are much more popular than the text editors. Reegards; João Felipe C.S (talk) 16:16, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Hello OldakQuill, I hope I can contact you here. A question because I am not well versed with licensing. Am I allowed to use this Image Views of a Foetus in the Womb.jpg on the cover of a printed (with ISBN) book? Do I have to buy a license? If I am allowed, how can I reference to the source correctly? Tip: Categorizing images[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 22:04, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
